Smith Manfax Sewer

Since the early 1980’s the Northview area of Manhattan has been plagued with sanitary sewer issues caused by capacity problems that have been the resultant of infiltration into the upstream system.  These issues have resulted in numerous sanitary sewer backups causing damage to existing homes in the area.   To address this issue SMH Consultants developed a bypass system intended to allow high flows from upstream to bypass the downstream collection system.  Since the new bypass required working in an existing neighborhood there was significant coordination involved in selecting an alignment that did not conflict with existing utilities in the area and also did not compromise large trees in the area.  Working with property owners SMH Consultants was able to identify an alignment that accomplished the project’s goals while at the same time being considerate of the existing neighborhood.
