Located in Manhattan, KS, construction of the City Park Pool was completed in the summer of 2010. The new pool site sits in the center of Manhattan in an existing park and was the site of the old City Park Pool. The existing pool was removed to make room for the new pool, which could be better described as a water park. The new City Park Pool has many great attractions for people of all ages. These attractions include a full size Olympic competition pool, a lazy river, a water bubble, two large water slides, a tot pool, and a waverider. The waverider is a surfing machine and was the first of its kind in the U.S. This project was challenging in many ways. There were many different entities within the City of Manhattan alone that had to be satisfied, as well as an extremely tight construction schedule. The project was also being very closely watched by the public. There were also many site issues to contend with, mainly concerning the existing surrounding site and the number of mature trees adjacent to the site. It was imperative that none of these mature trees be harmed and as little of the surrounding area be disturbed as possible. SMH was involved in the site design for this project. These responsibilities involved, parking lot design, sidewalk design, pool deck design, retaining wall design, design of a watermain, stormwater infrastructure design, sanitary sewer infrastructure design, coordination of all site utilities with each respective utility company, and construction administration. This project was successfully completed and is being enjoyed by the public.
