One of the largest and most complicated projects for SMH was the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Levee Improvement Project in Manhattan, Kansas. SMH worked with the City of Manhattan to complete easement acquisition services for 42 tracts requiring permanent and/or temporary easements for the project. In addition, SMH was the primary surveyor for the project and provided a complete boundary survey of the approximately 5.4-mile levee to first define the levee limits. The survey work also included analyzing title reports to examine ownership, property limits, and existing easements both along and crossing the levee system. Throughout the project, SMH maintained and updated the project strip map, which was a compilation of our survey work along the levee and within the construction limits of the project. The strip map defined the levee footprint, permanent and temporary easements, property ownership, and books and pages of existing easements recorded along the levee. SMH provided field staking of all easements during the acquisition process, and SMH surveyors were active in locating existing monumentation along the levee and setting control points.
