SMH Consultants was selected as the lead design consultant for the redevelopment of Trail Street in Dodge City, Kansas. This transformation involved the reconstruction of 12 blocks of arterial roadway, serving industrial, commercial, and residential areas. Beyond reconstruction, it introduced streetscape enhancements, incorporating hardscapes and low-maintenance plantings, which elevated the aesthetic and functional appeal of the area. As a precursor to Dodge City’s downtown redevelopment and STAR Bond projects, Trail Street was a pioneering effort that reshaped an industrial corridor into a more vibrant space that set the tone for future developments, including a water park, hotel, and restaurant. 

Public buy-in was achieved through a proactive approach, using face-to-face meetings, mailers, public input sessions, and regular updates to keep the community informed and engaged. Though intensive, the public involvement campaign effectively addressed concerns from nearby property owners, demonstrating that their issues could be resolved while improving the overall neighborhood. Additionally, this project was also honored as a Kansas Chapter APWA Project of the Year, further underscoring its impact on the community.
