SMH Consultants was the lead design consultant for a new and unique commercial development in Liberal, Kansas that consisted of a new Old Chicago restaurant and Comfort Suites hotel, new public streets, utility infrastructure, and stormwater retention.

When the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) created the US Highway 83 Bypass on the north side of Liberal, they realigned North Kansas Avenue and abandoned a piece of the old US Highway 83 creating a triangular piece of land as an afterthought. Coordination with multiple entities and stakeholders was critical to the success of this project due to these unique and difficult site conditions. SMH worked closely with the client, GMCN Architects, the City of Liberal, utility companies, and KDOT to turn the old highway right of way and leftover piece of land into a successful and attractive commercial development.

SMH provided survey, platting, civil engineering, and landscape architectural design services for this project. SMH was also hired by American Warrior Construction to provide construction inspection services including compaction testing on dirt work and concrete testing for the project. Since the project’s completion in 2018, the Old Chicago and Comfort Suites have been a great addition to the community and serve as an attractive gateway into Liberal.
