Wildcat Creek Road

Riley County Public Works, in close connection with the City of Manhattan, initiated the second phase of reconstructing Wildcat Creek Road in 2010.  The project extended along the Manhattan Technology Park development and south passed the Veterans Memorial Cemetary.  This 1.2 mile street improvement project coverts an existing two lane asphalt roadway to a three lane concrete corridor complete with curb and gutter and assoicated drainage improvements.  The project also included a continuation of a City provided potable water services with the understanding that much of the area along the Wildcat Creek Road corridor will eventually be annexed into the City of Manhattan.  Property acquisition and utility coordination became key issues very early in the design process.  SMH hosted a public involvement meeting to understand property owner concerns and access issues for the commercial businesses within the Tecnology Park.  After hearing concerns at this meeting, construction phasing of the project became a critical design element.  Sub consultants provided design for the southern part of the project which involved a two land section with open ditches, and a transition segment from two lane to three lane sections.  SMH also provided construction observation during construction and provided material testing to the Kansas Department of Transportation requirements.
